Computer viruses, trojans and spyware are all separate entities, but very closely related. They can be downloaded to your machine in the same ways and in the vast majority of cases without your knowledge.
Some websites offer 'fun' things to children such as smiley packs for MSN messenger, free music & software, better web search functionality or a faster connection. Quite often the downloaded file won't deliver on it's promise and you'll remove it, but by then the initial damage is done and things will only get worse.
Traces of malware are usually easy to spot. Your machine may run slow, do odd things, display redirected web pages (ie you frequently end up on a page you never intended to) or just not 'feel right'. If you experience any of the following then you're likely to be infected:

- A slow running system
- Websites redirecting to search pages or other content
- Your normal browser start page replaced by another website

How do we clean your machine?
Silver Newt don't charge you by the hour like many others would. Some scans can take over an hour to complete and we don't want you to pay us an hourly rate while we sit doing nothing! We'll take your machine away, clean it and get it back to you as soon as we've finished cleaning it.
We backup your documents, find the causes of infection using different methods and remove them plus any traces or related infections. We'll tell you how the infections found their way onto your machine in the first place, make sure your antivirus is up-to-date and give you guidelines on keeping the machine clean in future.
We also see reformatting the machine (wiping everything from the hard drive) as an absolute last resort whereas other companies may do this as a 'quick fix' to get their hands on your money.

Most infected computers will take 1 day to clean but deep-rooted problems can take longer. We charge £50 for the first day of cleaning and £35 for each subsequent day. This gives us the incentive to get your machine cleaned faster and passes the savings on to you!
